Vortex returns: Vortex Redux

What?

Vortex Gallery on Stoke Newington Church Street was an essential part of the Hackney art scene in the 1980s. More than three decades after its last exhibition it is being revived as Vortex Redux: a roving gallery, with the potential to explore both its roots with artists originally associated the gallery, and new art, including digital sound art.

The first pop-up exhibition will be ‘Estuary’ featuring the paintings of Paul Davey, a frequent exhibitor at the original Vortex Gallery, with a sound installation by Irving Kinnersley, who established and ran the gallery.

Why?

Vortex Redux is the result of an accidental meeting: Irving and Paul had lost contact for forty years before Irving spotted one of Paul’s paintings in the Bridgwater Arts Centre. He tracked Paul down, and they discovered that not only had they both moved left London for Somerset, but that, using different mediums, they had both produced work focused on the unique wetlands and estuary landscapes of Bridgwater Bay. Over the next few years they explored both the idea of re-creating the gallery, and the idea of a collaborative ‘Estuary Project’.
